Preface

This is a first attempt to trace the history of the Twinn family from its origins. Wherever possible it is based on original documents, but inevitably some of this material is open to different interpretations. Especially with the less familiar (to me) branches of the family and with its modern expansion far and wide, it has not been possible to consult all the documents and I have relied to some extent on indexes and lists. Some errors may therefore have crept in. I should be extremely grateful if any reader who finds such errors or who can add to the information would contact me so that the record may be set straight.
